I almost forgot the exisitence of this thing. Traditionally on Mid-Autumn Festival, we would eat this thingy. Mom would blanched them and peel them like chestnuts. I don’t remember what the taste of it was, but it could be like chestnuts. I just went to Chinatown in Brooklyn and that was it, they were right there: black little gothic creatures like bats like devil faces. Until then I realized that they might be a fruit, rather than nut or legume. In fact, it’s similar to water chestnut, it’s called “water caltrope.”
