Sick of the Jesus Phone

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

I love getting new cell-phones, I’ve always wanted to get a newer and better one. Such a sucker, I am. Somehow, it’s not the case for the iPhone this time. Why, oh why?

I think they simply over did it for me. There is way too much hype around it, and it’s totally out of control. The whole thing just once again shows how our consumerism society works. (But definitely not excusing myself, though.)

People lined up for it, fine, I understand; but apparently there is a virtually unlimited supply. It has yet been sold out. Unlike the Wii, which has been really hard the get, it’s not the case for the Jesus Phone.

They also make it so easy for you to switch their exclusive carrier, Cingular, by integrating the activation process in iTunes. All you need to do is unpack your jPhone, plug it in and say goodbye to your current (if any) wireless carrier and stick with Cingular for 2 good ol’ years. Welcome suckers!

They hyped it up so much that even my Japanese teacher used the jPhone price and plan rates to teach the class how to say $699 and $59.99 in Japanese! It’s insane.

Since you need to activate it with Cingular to actually use it, Cingular must be so damn happy. It sickens me even more. It’s just a sticky fly tape… welcome suckers!

I’ll wait, perhaps when the 2nd generation comes out; or even when the unlocked version comes out. I hate these locked phone bullshits. I have always been buying unlocked phones.

Oh, and this picture… “Welcome suckers!”

Now that the iPhone has (almost) arrived, let’s join the crowd and watch some related videos around the damn jPhone — ‘Jesus Phone’, the messiah phone.

Why didn’t I study biology?

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

jove.com screenshotWow, Wired magazine featured JoVE in this recent issue. JoVE stands for The Journal of Visualized Experiments. Experiments are shown with narration and, of course, videos. Essentially it’s YouTube meets hardcore scientific experiments. Wired magazine calls it ‘methodology porn’. Wait, so is it XTube for science?

Would you like to see how bacteria is injected into the stomach of flies? Or how about dissecting the pupae to extract neuronal cultures from their brains?

It reminds me how much I love my science classes in high school. I have always loved experiments and labs. Why the hell didn’t I go to study biology in college? I love biology!!!

Enjoy this one: ‘Mouse Dorsal Forebrain Explant Isolation’
Warning: contains graphic dissection materials!

10 Years

hong kong and china flagsOn July 1st, Hong Kong will be celebrating her 10th Anniversary of transferring her sovereignty to China. Since then, Hong Kong has become Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.

Right after the handover in 1997, I took a trip to Europe with my backpack and few friends. I started from Paris, then Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin, Geneva, Montpelier, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon and London.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since then. But then again, as cliché as it sounds, the older you get the faster time seems to go by.

Ah, the color of red.

laid eggA week ago I discovered that some mommie bird had laid a small egg on my planter. She covered it with branches, what a nice job she’s done! It was exciting to know that a new life was starting so close to me.

When I checked this morning, apparently there is only the shell to be seen. It certainly looks like the baby bird has been hatched and brought home by its mommie, since the shell and the branches have remained rather intact. I suppose if it’s been eaten, it wouldn’t have looked like so.

So apparently not only birds can rest on power lines, but men too.

treo 680So the iPhone is finally arriving later this month. Meanwhile, I am not ready to part with my trusted Treo. In fact, while everyone is eyeing on a new iPhone, I am going to upgrade get a new Treo. Yes, a new Treo. I have had my Treo for a couple of years now, and it hasn’t failed me once. It’s a deligent worker. And guess what, it’s the longest I have ever been with a single cellphone! PalmOS is still a very light and stable OS, with tons of developed and refined applications to go with it. Meanwhile, I have little interest to switch to AT&T just to get the iPhone, which, of course, is another big uncertainty. Let’s wait for at least another year or so, maybe it will be available…
